Creating the youngest and only minority-owned IRS-approved tax software tech company in the country.

The founders realized that to truly make a difference, they needed to equip people with both the tools and the knowledge.

This led to the birth of SmartWiz Academy, a community where anyone can learn to build a business for themselves by accurately, efficiently, and ethically preparing tax returns using the SmartWiz software and taking comprehensive courses offered through SmartWiz Academy.

SmartWiz Academy offers a step-by-step learning experience, with educators guiding students through the ins and outs of tax preparation.

Through Google’s Startups Black Founders Fund, SmartWiz was granted $150,000 as an award that helps Black entrepreneurs scale their businesses.

The grant is equity-free and SmartWiz will also receive sales and fundraising training, technical support from Google mentors, up to $100,000 in Google Cloud credits, mental health coaching from a team of Black and Latino therapists, and participation in the fund’s interactive community.

SmartWiz also spent three months in Silicon Valley, working with the brightest tech minds, as part of a TechStars cohort.

“It’s harder to get into TechStars than Harvard,” Harrell commented.

Since 2006, TechStars has funded over $24 billion to more than 3400 start-up companies.

“Since TechStars, it feels like every 60 days we’re making an announcement. They completely shifted our mindset into what it looks like to implement new AI technology into what we’re doing. We want to keep up the momentum we have as a company while continuing to be in a space where we’re always learning and growing,” Johnson noted.

To top it off, they received a round of seed money from Black Ambition, a nonprofit founded by Pharrell Williams.

Black Ambition’s goal is to help strengthen the pipeline of talented entrepreneurs and close the opportunity and wealth gaps derived from limited capital and resources.”

Their collaborations speak volumes about SmartWiz's reliability and innovation in the tech world.
